Expungement Center

A Major Life Obstacle.  Having any criminal arrest information on your record
could be a major obstacle in getting a job or changing careers. Today, almost all
medium to large companies perform background checks and more individuals
are being denied jobs because of a criminal record. Others are fired from jobs
they already have as companies change their employment policies and perform
background checks. Many times, these are records that could be removed from
police and court files or at least sealed away from access by most employers.

Not Just a Job. Employment is only one area of concern. A criminal record can
affect your ability to lease a residence; get a professional license; obtain
government benefits such as student loans, obtain a FOID card and even travel
to Canada or other countries. I have had clients come to me after being stopped
at the border for offenses as minor as misdemeanor battery.

Your Records are Public Records Until Expunged or Sealed:  All records
of a criminal arrest, charge and disposition are available to potential employers
doing background searches. Even if You were wrongfully arrested and/or a
charge was later thrown out by a judge, the record remains until you ask to
remove it. And the only way to do that is to file a Petition with the court after the
case is over - and sometimes only after an additional waiting period.
